If you're looking at the web site to find out more about Shrewsbury Round Table, then read this recent article written by a member.
"You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home to find and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work is over, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle. Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expand your horizons?
Of course there are plenty of ways to meet new people, whether it be through your sport, hobby or your interest – all needing varying amounts of time and commitment. In my case, I found an organisation where the members meet a couple of evenings per month after work, have a laugh doing something interesting, and meet up in the pub afterwards.
In the last year I’ve been rock climbing, go-karting, paintballing, canoeing, camping, orienteering, dry-skiing, played tennis, croquet, and been taught all about drugs by the police. I’ve also dressed as Santa and driven round town in a LandRover towing a sleigh, raising thousands of pounds for charity at the same time. I’ve even helped several bus loads of old-age pensioners to go to an evening out at the theatre. As well as finishing all these evenings with a pint, there have also been several black tie evenings with after-dinner speakers to go to. Throughout it all I have met a select bunch of 20 or so other blokes between 18 and 45, from a wide variety of jobs and professions who all enjoy an evening out and a laugh. Our wives and children get to know each other at the annual family bonfire night, family camping weekend, Christmas party or annual Ladies’ night.
And yet if you had told me two years ago that I was going to join Round Table I wouldn’t have known what you were talking about, and would probably have had fears about some sort of fund-raising mad group of old men with funny rituals and strong business links, and run a mile. Luckily for me, my wife persuaded me to go along to get me out of her hair and I found it was just a group of ordinary blokes who wanted to do something a bit out of the ordinary. Their motto is “Fun, Friendship and Fundraising” and I think that just about sums it up.
If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings to see if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we can even arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for an informal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts - just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like to be able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you."
